Fall Creek Trail Repaving Complete

It took a couple of months, but the re-alignment and repaving of the eastern section of the Fall Creek Trail is finally complete (well, except for about 450 feet of top coat at the western end). Yes, fellow cyclists, you can now make the six-mile trip from the walk-through gate at Fort Harrison State Park to 38th Street with exactly one street crossing at the very beginning (Boy Scout Road).

Edco Construction stripped out the narrow, lumpy pavement along the length of the trail from Fall Creek Parkway and  Kessler to the parking area at Binford before laying all-new asphalt. It's wide and smooth now, a welcome change from the pavement that was in such poor condition that cyclists took to Fall Creek Parkway (where the pavement is in no better condition, come to think of it).

Also of note, the dangerous "root speed bump" at mile seven has been leveled and new pavement laid. I doubt it had anything at all to do with the cyclist who suffered cranio-facial injuries, a broken wrist, and broken ribs in a fall there on August 16. Yeah, sure...

new section Fall Creek Greenway TrailEven more exciting, the horrendous stretch crossing Fall Creek along the 38th Street Bridge is being bypassed: a construction company has almost completed a short section of trail along Fall Creek Boulevard from 38th to 39th (across from the fairgrounds). Based on a new copy of the greenway map, the trail will cross 38th Street at a traffic light, continue north alongside Fall Creek, then cross the river on 39th Street's historic limestone bridge. Can't wait...

Now, if someone will just remind the city to keep the underbrush trimmed along (and above) the trail...
