The new section's nearly three-mile length connects two existing portions of the trail. The southern end is just north of 191st Street and Wheeler Road at Grand Park. The northern section began between 221st and 226th on Six Points Road. Prior to the completion, users who wanted to continue to Sheridan needed to ride surface streets between the two points. A marker at the old northern terminus informs users that they're at mile 10.1, measured from the Hamilton-Marion County line at 96th Street.
The new paved path slowly climbs about 60 feet over its 3-mile length, mostly within a narrow band of trees. At about mile 12, users will pass through the small town of Hortonville, just north of 206th Street. Slightly beyond where users pick up the older section of trail, there's a repair station with tools and air at mile marker 13.1. The only amenities along this section of the trail, as of this writing, are found at the far north end of the trail where it passes through Sheridan's Biddle Park. Restrooms and water can be found there in season. Within the city limits of Sheridan riders can find restaurants and convenience stores. There are no formal trailheads along the trail beyond 191st, although there is a small park just south of Hortonville. |
The new connection gives trail users almost 26 miles of off-street pavement beginning at 10th Street and the Pogue's Run Trail in near-north Indy; passing through heavily-used sections in Broad Ripple and downtown Carmel. Restrooms can be found at 54th Street, 96th Street, and Greyhound pass; as well as at some of the trailheads.
