Good News, Bad News on Westfield Bridge

Updated

Some time around Memorial Day, Westfield opened the bridge to traffic. Two things to know:
  • There's a road (access to restaurants?) that crosses the south approach. I'll just say that it's "inconvenient" amd leave it at that. Southbound riders be aware.
  • The surface is not particularly smooth.

If you've managed to get north of Carmel on the Monon Greenway in the past year or so, you've probably noticed by now that the town of Westfield forked over several million dollars to install a bridge over Indiana Highway 32. As a result, the path was closed from its intersection with the Midland Trail to several hundred yards north of 32, necessitating that cyclists either navigate busy Westfield Park Boulevard - Wheeling Road or detour west to Quaker Park and head north on Dartown Road to reconnect with the trail where it crosses 181st Street.

That's all well and good, except that work began on the bridge in November 2018, and still isn't done eighteen months later. According to one source, the delay is due to a redesign that added lighting in the rails. Whatever the case, as of last week (May 20) the "Road Closed" signs were gone when we made the turn from the Midland to the Monon. That's the good news.
The bad news is that the bridge itself was still closed. After all that time, all Westfield/Hamilton County managed to do was to get the construction crews to stop parking on the asphalt where the trail crosses 32 at grade.

Oh, well, at least now the mileage markers are (more or less) correct... Kinda makes you think that Hamilton County is taking lessons from Indianapolis, doesn't it!
